Infertility Q & A

What Causes Infertility?

At the Valencia Center for Women’s Health, Dr. Navi and his team understand the confusing and distressing process of battling infertility. We take pride in offering support, counseling, and practical solutions to help you start a family.

A woman’s fertility is influenced by a variety of factors. Her age, her general health, her weight, her lifestyle habits, such as smoking and drinking, and her stress management all play into her ability to conceive and carry a fetus.

The most common causes of female infertility point to conditions affecting the reproductive organs: the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. These may include hormonal conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome which interfere with normal ovulation or history of sexually transmitted diseases which may affect the health of the fallopian tubes.

Am I Infertile?

The primary indicator of infertility is a couple’s difficulty in conceiving after an active period (usually of at last a year) of trying to get pregnant. Still, only a doctor can diagnose and effectively treat any underlying issues that may contribute to infertility.

It may be necessary for a female to see a doctor about possible infertility if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • Between the ages of 35 and 40 and trying to conceive for more than six months
  • Over the age of 40
  • Irregularity or absence of menstrual periods
  • Known fertility problems
  • Diagnosis of endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease
  • History of more than one miscarriage
  • Prior treatment of cancer

If any of the above match your current circumstances, schedule an appointment at the Valencia Center for Women so that our physicians can conduct a medical history and evaluation of your case.

What Can I Do About Infertility?

The treatment of infertility is directed at the underlying cause with considerations made for the duration of infertility, the age of the woman, and the individual or couple’s preferences. Typically, this condition is treated with medications, surgery, intrauterine insemination, assisted reproductive technology, or a combination of these therapies.
